...Later, as coastal trade flourished with the advance of European powers, they hunted and exported slaves, and acquired guns and ammunition. At the end of the 16th century, King Olompoto created a cavalry force not seen in the surrounding area and trained his army well. Thus, with its elite organizations and weapons, Oyo became a powerful military kingdom and advanced westward and southward, making Dahomey and Aja on the coast its vassal states in the 18th century.
