A village in Watarai County in southern Mie Prefecture. Population 1,590 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Ouchiyama River, a tributary of the Miyagawa River. Most of the village area is mountainous, part of the Kii Mountain Range, with settlements and cultivated land in the small areas of lowland along the river. The JR Kisei Main Line and National Route 42 run north to south along the Ouchiyama River in the east. Forestry is the main industry, and the village produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber, but depopulation is progressing and there is a noticeable labor shortage. 三重県南部,度会(わたらい)郡の村。人口1590(1995)。宮川支流の大内山川の上流域に位置する。村域の大部分は紀伊山地に属する山地で,河川沿いのわずかな低地に集落と耕地が形成されている。東部の大内山川沿いをJR紀勢本線と国道42号線が南北に貫通する。基幹産業は林業で,杉,ヒノキの良材を産出するが,過疎化が進み,労働力の不足が目立つ。第2次世界大戦後酪農が普及した。特産物としてシイタケの栽培も行われる。
