...The first 30 stories are Aesop's fables, and the remaining 64 are animal fables. Aesop's Fables was brought to Japan in 1590 (Tensho 18) by the Spanish missionary Valignano, and was printed in the Japanese translation of the Roman alphabet in Amakusa, Kyushu, as Aesop's Fables. This was the first translation of Western literature in Japan.

…The morals of fables are traditionally earthly, teaching wisdom for the way we live our lives, but they were often quoted in sermons in medieval churches, and, together with their role as textbooks, they were widely loved. The collection of Aesop's Fables, which the Jesuits used to educate their readers, was brought to Japan by missionaries as the Amakusa edition of Aesop's Fables (1593), which marked the beginning of the translation of European literature into Japan. There were no works of fable worth mentioning in Renaissance France, but in the 17th century, J. de La Fontaine published his verse Fables (1668-94), which completely renewed the tradition. …
