A diplomatic mission abroad where a consul performs his duties, or a diplomatic mission as its office. According to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, the receiving state of a consular post shall assist the sending state in acquiring or obtaining a diplomatic mission within its territory, shall not impose any dues or taxes on the mission, and in principle shall not requisition it. The authorities of the receiving state are also obliged to protect the mission from intrusion, damage, and other acts, and may not enter the mission without the consent of the head of the consular post, except in emergency cases such as fire. 領事が職務を行う在外公館,またその事務所としての公館。 1963年の領事関係に関するウィーン条約によれば,領事機関の接受国は,自国領域内で派遣国が公館を取得または入手することを助け,公館に対して賦課金,租税を課さず,原則として公館を徴発してはならない。また接受国の当局は,侵入,損壊などの行為から公館を保護する義務を負い,火災など緊急の場合を除いて,領事機関の長の同意なく公館に立入ってはならないとされている。
