Germany is often divided into three regions based on the relief and formation of the land surface: the North German Plain (Norddeutsches Tiefland), the Mittelgebirge (Mittelgebirge), and the Alps. The latter are sometimes further divided into the Massif Mountains Region and the Southwest German Terrace Region, and the Alps into the so-called Alpine Alps and the Alpine foreland (Alpenvorland).
