(1902-81). His real name was Kawarazaki Toranosuke. His stage name was Yamazakiya. He was born in Tokyo and took his stage name in 1913 (Taisho 2). He trained in Kabuki as a member of the Ichikawa Sadanji II troupe from 1913, and also performed at the Tsukiji Little Theater and founded the Kokoroza troupe with Murayama Tomoyoshi and others, participating in the new theater movement. In 1931 (Showa 6), he founded the Zenshinza theater company and, together with Nakamura Kan'emon, he devoted himself to guiding the troupe in both acting and theory. However, in 1967, he announced his withdrawal from the Communist Party, which he had joined as a group with other troupe members in 1949 (Showa 24), and left Zenshinza on his own. In his later years, he produced "Qu Yuan" and "The Roof Tiles of Tenpyo" with a group of freelance actors, touring the country in which he played the leading roles himself. He inherited the performing style of the second Sadanji and excelled in profound acting. His best roles included the monk Narukami Shonin and Benkei in "Kanjincho". His books include "Kanjincho" (1965), "Introduction to Kabuki" (1980), and "Looking Back and Forward" (1981).
