A marine fish of the Scombridae family of the Perciformes order. Its Japanese name means a fish with large teeth similar to those of a bonito. It is also known as Kitsune-katsuo. There are three species in the Hagatsuo genus worldwide, and its English name comes from the Spanish word for beautiful. In Japanese waters, it is found mainly in the coastal waters of southern Japan. It grows to about 1m in length, but is usually caught at about 25-50cm. Its body is spindle-shaped and slightly laterally compressed, with a large head. There is a pair of weak ridges on either side of a strong ridge on the caudal peduncle, and the whole body is covered in scales. The dorsal side has 6-7 black stripes running slightly diagonally across an indigo-blue surface. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
