San Salvador (Island) (English spelling)

An island in the central eastern part of the Bahamas. Also known as Watling Island. Area 155.4 km2. Population about 1000. Columbus discovered this island, which the natives called Guanahani, on October 12, 1492, marking the first step in his exploration of the New World. In Latin American countries, October 12 is celebrated as "Discovery of America Day." The native Arawak people left the island to work as laborers during the colonial period. Today, it is isolated from major transportation routes and industry is not very active.

バハマ諸島の中東部にある島。別名ワトリングWatling島。面積155.4km2。人口約1000。コロンブスは1492年10月12日原住民がグアナハニと呼んでいたこの島を発見，新大陸探検の第一歩を印したといわれ，ラテン･アメリカの国々ではこの10月12日を〈アメリカ大陸発見の日〉としている。原住民のアラワク族は植民地時代に労働者として島の外に出てしまった。現在は交通の要路から隔たり，産業はあまり振るわない。
