An island in the central eastern part of the Bahamas. Also known as Watling Island. Area 155.4 km2. Population about 1000. Columbus discovered this island, which the natives called Guanahani, on October 12, 1492, marking the first step in his exploration of the New World. In Latin American countries, October 12 is celebrated as "Discovery of America Day." The native Arawak people left the island to work as laborers during the colonial period. Today, it is isolated from major transportation routes and industry is not very active. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
