Aristotle's lantern

Aristotle's lantern

The name of the mouthparts of echinoderm sea urchins. A large, complex chewing organ located at the bottom inside the shell, it is made up of 40 bones of five types, and has 60 muscles of six types attached to it. The largest of these bones is called the jawbone, and inside the suture of the paired jawbone pieces is a slender dentary. The lower tip of the dentary is pointed and is exposed in the mouth as a tooth. The name comes from the fact that the philosopher Aristotle first described it in the 4th century BC as resembling an ancient Greek lantern. Among sea urchins, the sea urchins, the sea urchins and the sea urchins, do not have this organ.
