…Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) was relatively tolerant of these trends, but his successor, Pius X (1903-14), was tough from the start, excommunicating almost all clergy except Hugel and others, and ordering the banning of books. In the Anglican Church, the Modern Churchmen's Union (abbreviated as MCU) was born (1898) based on the Canonical Church, and the journal Modern Churchman was also published (1911). Led by H. Rashdall (1858-1924), WR Inge (1860-1954), and K. Lake (1872-1946), they opposed the Fundamentalists and attempted to modernize doctrine and liturgy, which later influenced the Oxford Movement. …
