A city in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. It occupies the right bank of the downstream Kumano River, and is mostly mountainous. The central town on the right bank of the river mouth was established as a town in front of the shrine gates of Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, which was called Shingu in contrast to Kumano Iwasu Jinja Shrine. During the Edo period, it developed as a castle town and port town for Mizuno, a chief retainer of the Kishu Tokugawa clan. It prospered as a timber distribution center for the Kumano region, and today, lumber, pulp, and paper manufacturing industries are thriving. Factories that produce automobile parts and electronic parts are also located in Shingu Port. The Kisei Main Line runs through the city, and it is a tourist base for Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Doro Gorge is located in the north. In 2004, the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the World Heritage List (Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, Kumano Pilgrimage Routes). In October 2005, Kumanogawa Town in Higashimuro District was incorporated. The area is 255.23 km 2 . 31,498 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
