Kanuri

...Islam was introduced as early as the 10th and 11th centuries, and the city dwellers converted, but it was not until the 19th century that it spread to the villages. The agricultural peoples, such as the Hausa, Songhai, Jerma, and Kanuri, occupy the fertile southern part of the country, and cultivate millet, sorghum, and other cereals as their staple crops, as well as groundnuts and cotton. The Songhai also fish on the Niger River, and the Kanuri on Lake Chad.
