Hogarth - William Hogarth

Hogarth - William Hogarth

British painter. Born and died in London. He first studied printmaking, and in the late 1720s, he studied oil painting at the art school of Thornhill, the court painter of the time. He practically eloped and married his teacher's daughter. At first, he painted small portraits and pictures of family gatherings to make a living, but then he began to paint series of narrative pictures. After painting six scenes from "The Life of a Courtesan" around 1731, he produced many narrative pictures and achieved success, and reconciled with his father-in-law. After 1735, he produced "The Life of a Prostitute" and others, and in 1745 he painted "Marriage à la Mode". Some of these works were made into ballad operas, and he himself made them into copperplate prints that became popular with the public. This was inseparable from the trends of the time, such as the establishment of prose by Swift and the development of journalism. These works sharply criticized the aristocracy and wealthy classes of the time, and are said to be the origin of caricature. However, he also left behind lively and fresh oil sketches such as "The Shrimp Seller's Girl." These casual works show his love for humanity even more strongly. In 1953, he also published a treatise titled "Analysis of Beauty."
