A leader in the Japanese shipping industry. The abbreviation NYK is well known worldwide. Founded in 1885 by the merger of Mitsubishi Kaisha and Kyodo Unyu Kaisha. Mitsubishi Group. Before World War II, under government protection, it developed into one of the world's leading shipping companies, but was destroyed in the war. It again made an effort to expand its fleet, and in 1964, as part of the reconstruction and restructuring of the shipping industry, it merged with Mitsubishi Kaiun, and in 1990, it completed the construction of the large luxury liner Asuka. In 1998, it absorbed Showa Kaiun. In 2005, it made Nippon Cargo Airlines a consolidated subsidiary. As of the end of fiscal year 2011, the group operated 836 ships, and has the largest number of car carriers in the world. Headquarters in Tokyo. 日本海運業界の雄。略称NYKは世界的に高い知名度。1885年三菱会社と共同運輸会社の合併で成立。三菱系。第２次大戦前，政府保護下に世界有数の海運会社に発展したが，戦災で壊滅。再び船隊増強に努め，1964年の海運再建整備では三菱海運を合併，1990年大型豪華客船〈飛鳥〉竣工。1998年には昭和海運を吸収合併。2005年日本貨物航空を連結子会社にする。2011年度末のグループ運航船舶数836隻で，自動車船の隻数は世界一。本社東京。2011年資本金1443億円，2011年３月期売上高１兆9291億円。2011年３月期の売上構成（％）は，定期船24，不定期船41，物流20，ターミナル５，客船２，航空輸送４，その他４。海外売上比率82％。
