Before World War II, under government protection, it developed into one of the world's leading shipping companies, but was destroyed in the war. It again made an effort to expand its fleet, and in 1964, as part of the reconstruction and restructuring of the shipping industry, it merged with Mitsubishi Kaiun, and in 1990, it completed the construction of the large luxury liner Asuka.
