Waka Yamada

Japanese: 山田わか - やまだわか

1879-1957 A women's activist from the Taisho to Showa eras.
Born December 1, 1879. She was deceived in America and fell into a world of hardship. She escaped to an asylum and married Yamada Yoshikichi. She returned to Japan in 1906 and appealed for respect for motherhood in magazines such as "Seito", debating with Yosano Akiko. In 1934, she became the first chairperson of the Women's League for the Promotion of the Establishment of the Maternity Protection Law. After the war, she devoted herself to the rehabilitation of prostitutes. She passed away on September 6, 1957, at the age of 77. She was born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Her maiden name was Asaba. Her works include "Women, People, Mothers" and the novel "Ominaeshi".

明治12年12月1日生まれ。渡米先でだまされて苦界に身をしずめる。救済施設にのがれ,山田嘉吉と結婚。明治39年帰国し,「青鞜(せいとう)」などで母性尊重をうったえ,与謝野晶子と論争する。昭和9年母性保護法制定促進婦人連盟初代委員長。戦後は売春婦の更生につくした。昭和32年9月6日死去。77歳。神奈川県出身。旧姓は浅葉。著作に「女・人・母」,小説に「女郎花(おみなえし)」など。
