The goddess, who rode in a chariot drawn by two horses named Lampos (light) and Phaethon (shining one), and who ran through the sky as the vanguard of the sun god, is described in Homer's epic poems as having "pink fingers" and "wearing saffron clothing." …

…In ancient Greece, the wind gods were used as symbols to represent the four directions, north, south, east, and west, and the character of each wind god was associated with the characteristics of the corresponding direction. In other words, Boreas, the god of the north wind, had a stern and violent nature, Zephyros, the god of the west wind, was a gentle young man who brought spring and life, Notos, the god of the south wind, was powerful, and Euros, the god of the east wind, was a god who brought fertility. Throughout the Roman period, these four wind gods were further expanded to include the wind gods of the 12 directions, and they became decorative icons for indicating the directions of ancient maps, including Ptolemy's world map. …
