Ochi Gangjo Mausoleum - The Misasagi on the Hill of Ochi

During this reign, the Crown Prince Nakano Oe held real power and promoted the reform of politics, but overseas, the tense international situation in East Asia was finally reaching its final stage. In 660 (6th year of Saimei), the combined forces of Tang and Silla attacked Baekje first, so the Imperial Court decided to send a Baekje rescue force to Korea. In January of the following year, 661, Prince Nakano Oe went to Iwase (Nagatsu) Palace in Naotsu, Tsukushi (near Hakata Bay) with the Emperor and others to command the rescue force. The Emperor moved to Asakura Palace in May of the same year, but died there in July of the same year. His body was returned to Asuka in Yamato during the same year, and in February of 667 (6th year of Tenchi), he was buried together with Princess Ojin at Ochi no Oka no Ueno Misazaki in Takaichi County, Yamato Province.
