The Twelver, the major Shiite sect, shares much in common with the Sunnites in terms of the basic practice of Islamic law. Sunnites pray (namāz) five times a day, but in Iran, where Twelverians are the majority, it is common to combine the two midday and afternoon prayers into one, and the two evening and night prayers into one. In addition, the announcement of the time of prayer (adhan) is recited with two additional verses.
