...The word photogénique is a French word meaning something that looks good on camera, and is also commonly used as an adjective, but as a film term it refers to the beauty of an actor (especially an actress) who looks good on camera, and also has a historical significance as a film aesthetic in the silent era. At the time when French films, which once dominated the world market, were being overwhelmed by Hollywood films after World War I, Louis Delluc (1890-1924), one of France's most pioneering filmmakers, used the word photogénie to describe the essence of film, and even published a book titled Photogénie (1920). "Photogénie" has been said to be an indefinable "magic word," but in his book "Cinematography on Mount Etna" (1926), director and theorist Jean Epstein, who looked up to Deluc as his mentor, defined photogénie as "an element inherent in the art, what color is to painting, or volume to sculpture," while film critic and theorist Léon Moussinac (1890-1964) defined the essence of photogénie as "visual rhythm."
