1761-1842 (11th year of the Horeki era - 13th year of the Tenpo era)
A haiku poet from the late Edo period. His surname was Narita. He was commonly known as Hikosuke. His real name was Kyuzaemon Toshisada. He was from Kanazawa. He was a samurai of the Kaga domain and an expert in archery and horsemanship. In 1790 (Kansei 2), he studied under Ransatsu in Kyoto and lived at Rakutozan Sorinji Temple. Following his teacher's will after his death, he succeeded Bashodo II. He later took the name Namuan, and along with Umemura, he shared the Kyoto haiku world in half, and together with Hourou, he was known as one of the three great masters of the Tenpo period. In 1830 (Tenpo 1), he handed over Bashodo to Sengai, and later established Taitoan in Yasaka and retired from the haiku world. He was known for his slow recitation, and worked hard and diligently, and was strict in teaching his students.
