? ‐217 Wife of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Born in Emesa, Syria, the daughter of a priest in charge of sun worship, she was welcomed into the royal court. Ambitious and cultured, she gathered a circle of scholars around her and had great influence at court. After the death of her husband, she was concerned about the conflict between her two sons, Caracalla and Geta, and tried to mediate between them, but was unsuccessful. In her later years, she retired to Nicomedia, but is said to have committed suicide upon hearing the news of the death of Emperor Caracalla, who had murdered Geta.
