Wife of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Born in Emesa, Syria, the daughter of a priest in charge of sun worship, she was welcomed into the royal court. Ambitious and cultured, she gathered a circle of scholars around her and had great influence at court. After the death of her husband, she was concerned about the conflict between her two sons, Caracalla and Geta, and tried to mediate between them, but was unsuccessful. In her later years, she retired to Nicomedia, but is said to have committed suicide upon hearing the news of the death of Emperor Caracalla, who had murdered Geta.

ローマ皇帝セプティミウス･セウェルスの妃。シリアのエメサで太陽神崇拝をつかさどる神官の娘として生まれ，宮廷に迎えられた。野心的で教養豊かな彼女のまわりには，学者らの取巻き連中が集まり，宮廷でも影響力が強かった。夫帝の死後，彼女の2人の息子カラカラとゲタとの兄弟対立を憂慮して調停に尽力したが，成功するに至らなかった。晩年にはニコメディアに隠棲したが，かつてゲタを殺害したカラカラ帝の訃報に接して自決したと伝えられている。
