Anglo-French Entente; Entente Cordiale

Japanese: 英仏協商 - えいふつきょうしょう(英語表記)Anglo-French Entente; Entente Cordiale
Anglo-French Entente; Entente Cordiale
An agreement concluded between Great Britain and France on April 8, 1904. The two countries had been at odds in diplomatic relations for many years, but they came to share common interests in the face of Germany's imperialistic advance, and with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, they concluded this agreement to adjust the spheres of influence of the two countries. The main points of the agreement were: (1) mutual recognition of British supremacy in Egypt and French supremacy in Morocco, (2) the renunciation of French fishing rights in Newfoundland, (3) determination of the sphere of influence in Siam (Thailand), (4) confirmation of free passage through the Suez Canal and the Straits of Gibraltar, etc. After the conclusion of this treaty, the Anglo-Russian Entente was concluded, and together with the Franco-Russian Alliance, it became the Triple Entente, which came to compete with the Triple Alliance led by Germany.
