Lee Kengo

Chinese author, playwright, and literary scholar. His pen name was Liu Xiwei. He was from Shanxi Province and lived in Beijing for many years. He graduated from the Department of Western Literature at Tsinghua University in 1930. He went to France in 1931 to study Flaubert, and returned to China in 1933 to work in translation and education. He also participated in the Chinese drama movement from a young age, publishing his works in the supplementary publication of "Morning News" and "Words." He excelled in light-hearted comedies with witty and free-spirited dialogue. He is one of the leading playwrights of the 1930s. His plays include "Only Spring" and "Leading the Example." After liberation, he engaged in research on foreign literature at the Institute of Literature at Peking University and the Institute of Literature at the Academy of Sciences, and translated many works by Gorky, Tolstoy, and others in addition to French literature.

中国の作家、戯曲家、文学研究者。筆名に劉西渭(りゅうせいい)。山西省の人、長く北京(ペキン)に住む。1930年清華大学西洋文学系を卒業。31年渡仏し、フロベールを研究、33年帰国、翻訳と教育研究に従事した。また少年時より話劇運動に参加、『晨報(しんぽう)』副刊や『語絲(ごし)』に作品を発表、軽妙洒脱(しゃだつ)な対話を駆使した、軽快なテンポの喜劇を得意とした。30年代を代表する戯曲家の一人。戯曲に『これは春だけ』『率先垂範』などがある。解放後、北京大学文学研究所、科学院文学研究所などで外国文学の研究に従事し、仏文学のほか、ゴーリキー、トルストイなど多数の訳著がある。
