The six species that breed in Siberia and northern China are the most numerous: the White-naped Crane Grus vipio , the Hooded Crane Grus monacha , the Red-crowned Crane Grus japonensis , the Siberian Crane Grus leucogeranus , the Common Crane Grus, and the Sandhill Crane Grus canadensis . In Asia, the Red-crowned Crane Grus nigricollis breeds in Japan, the Black-necked Crane Grus nigricollis in the highlands of Kashmir, Tibet, and northwestern China, the Sarus Crane Grus antigone in South Asia, and the Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo in central Asia. Four species of crane are endemic to Africa: Bugeranus carunculatus , A. paradisea , Balearica pavonina (illustration), and Balearica regulorum . Common cranes and demoiselle cranes also spend the winter here.
