Out-range strategy

...The commonly known navy's "gradual attrition tactics" are operational guidelines in the "Combined Fleet Strategy," which calls for using all possible means at each stage to weaken the power of an attacking superior enemy fleet, and then engaging in a decisive battle. Strictly speaking, this is difficult to call a "tactic" according to the definition of the former navy. "Out-of-range tactics" are tactics of the former navy that aim to attack from outside the enemy's range or attack zone, and they have been promoting the development of aircraft and artillery capable of longer-range attacks than the enemy. The Japanese Navy implemented this tactic, as defined in the "First Mobile Fleet Strategy," during the Battle of the Marianas (June 1944), but failed, and the Japanese Navy's subsequent tactics have shifted to "desperate surprise attacks," "kamikaze attacks," and "assault tactics." ...

…一般に知られている海軍の〈漸減戦法〉は，《連合艦隊戦策》における〈作戦方針〉で，来攻する優勢な敵艦隊に対し各段階で各種手段を尽くしてその勢力を減殺したのち，決戦を挑もうという戦策であり，旧海軍の定義から厳密にいえば〈戦法〉といいがたい。〈アウトレンジ戦法〉は，敵の射程外，攻撃圏外から攻撃を加えようという旧海軍の戦法で，敵より長距離攻撃の可能な航空機または大砲を整備するよう施策してきた。日本海軍はマリアナ海戦(1944年6月)に際し，《第一機動艦隊戦策》で規定したこの戦法を実行したが失敗，その後の日本海軍の戦法は〈必死奇襲戦法〉〈特攻戦法〉〈体当り戦法〉といったものとなった。…
