Born March 11, 1897 in Menlo Park, California.
[Died] December 10, 1965, Shady, New York American composer and pianist. Graduated from the University of California. After serving in World War I, he studied at the New York School of Applied Music, and then studied comparative musicology at the University of Berlin from 1931 to 1932. In his early piano pieces, he invented a technique called "tone clusters," in which sound chunks were struck with both arms and fists, and in 1932 he demonstrated the Rhythmicon, an electric rhythm instrument that he invented with the help of Theremin, in New York, exploring new sound materials. He was one of the leading American modernists interested in folk music. He was also active as a member of many contemporary music organizations. He wrote a wide variety of works, totaling over 500 pieces.
