Born 10 February 1609, Whitton, Middlesex Died in 1642. English poet and playwright from Paris. One of the "Royalist poets." Born into a distinguished family, he studied at Cambridge University. He is known for his extravagant lifestyle in London. His poems and plays were written mainly for courtiers, and are rich in refined fantasy and descriptions of decadent customs, making him a pioneer of Restoration literature. He fought as a royalist during the civil war. He is said to have fled to France and committed suicide afterwards. His works include A Session of Poets (1637), Fragmenta Aurea (46), and Last Remains (48).
