A display worn on the face like ski goggles. Abbreviation for head mounted display. A small LCD or CRT is attached to the lens of the glasses, and images are projected to each eye, enabling stereoscopic vision. This is the basic hardware for wearable computers and virtual reality. There are types in which the head movement of the wearer is detected by a gyroscope inside the HMD, and the computer controls the image in accordance with the movement, enhancing the sense of realism. It is used in simulation training for special environments such as outer space and the inside of a nuclear reactor, as well as in computer games.

スキーのゴーグルのように顔面に装着するディスプレイ。 head mounted displayの略称。めがねのレンズ部分に小型の液晶や CRTが取り付けられ，左右それぞれの眼に映像を映し出すことで立体視を可能にしている。ウェアラブル・コンピュータやバーチャル・リアリティ (仮想現実) の基本となるハードウェアで，装着した人間の頭の動きを HMD内のジャイロなどで検出し，動きに合わせてコンピュータが映像を制御し現実感を増すタイプもある。宇宙空間，原子炉内部などの特殊な環境のシミュレーション訓練，コンピュータ・ゲームなどに応用されている。
