1868‐1932 Egyptian poet. Born into a distinguished family in Cairo, he was of Arab, Turkish, Kurdish and Greek descent. He studied law and was sent to France by Tawfik, the viceroy of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. He had close ties to the royal court in the first half of his life, but when Abbas Hilmi II was overthrown he left for Spain, and after returning to Egypt he turned around and took the side of the people. His forte was poetry in the qasida style, and he became one of the most important poets in this field in modern times, and is often compared to Hafez Ibrahim.
