("Tai" means Thailand and "Meng" means Burma) In 1942 during the Pacific War, the Japanese military built a railway between Tambizayah in Burma and Nong Pladuk in Thailand to supply supplies to Burma (Myanmar). It was about 415 km long and completed the following year. It was called the "Death Railway" because many Allied POWs and local workers mobilized for the work died.
