...The fruit is a heart-shaped, flat capsule containing two seeds. In herbal medicine, the root is called kashikon and is used as a cough suppressant and expectorant along with the root of the same genus, P. tenuifolia Willd. (Japanese name: Polygala tenuifolia). There are about 450 species of Polygala in temperate and tropical regions around the world, and 20 species are cultivated for decorative purposes.
