A layer is a part of the ocean where the vertical gradient of water temperature, salinity, density, etc. is particularly large and can be used to separate the upper and lower layers. The word layer is not usually used alone, and there is no word in English that directly corresponds to layer. Depending on the quantity being studied, it is used as thermocline, halocline (halocline or salinocline), pycnocline, etc. These layers are formed in relation to each other, so when viewed broadly, they often seem to refer to the same layer, but strictly speaking they are not the same.
