Collection of Jewel - Shugyokushu

Collection of Jewel - Shugyokushu

Jien's family collection. Compiled by Prince Son'en Nyudo. Five or seven volumes. Published in 1346 (Shohei 1, Sadawa 2). One of the Rokukashu. Using poems left by Jien as the source material, the collection of 100 poems was compiled in 1328 (Kareki 3), more than 100 years after Jien's death, and was completed 18 years later with the addition of other parts. The book is thought to be five volumes, with a total of over 5,900 poems (including thematic poems and poems by others), but there are three uncollected types of 100 poems and one type of 50 poems that have been passed down separately.

On the other hand, the seven-volume version also seems to be a variant that arose during the compilation process, but the total number of poems is less than that of the five-volume version, and there are some interchanges between the two. The "Shugyokushu" is a fundamental resource for research on the poet Jien, who is the second most numerous poet in the "Shin Kokinshu" (92 poems), but it also shows a free-spirited style that deviates from the Shin Kokinshu style.
