…He joined Thomas Wheeldon's pottery in 1754 and became independent in 1759. He succeeded in improving cream-colored pottery, which inherited the tradition of lead-glazed pottery from the Middle Ages, and in 1767 he was granted the official privilege of being made the Queen's Potter by Queen Charlotte, who named his pottery "Queen's Ware." He was also a modern businessman, introducing machinery and power into his own workshop, transforming the previously domestic pottery industry into a large, organized factory, and sending large quantities of inexpensive everyday items to domestic and international markets. …
