Zenritsukata - Zenritsukata

Japanese: 禅律方 - ぜんりつかた

An institution established in the Muromachi Shogunate that handled lawsuits and other matters related to Zen and Ritsu temples (including individual Zen and Ritsu monks). It is assumed that the Muromachi Shogunate established the Zen and Ritsukata to protect and control Zen and Ritsu temples. The head of the Zen and Ritsukata was called the Tonin, and the existence of this Zen and Ritsukata Tonin can be confirmed from 1337 (Engen 2, Kenmu 4) in Hosokawa Kazuuji to a certain person in 1379 (Tenju 5, Koryaku 1) (it was discontinued for a while). The duties of the Zen and Ritsukata, which was made up of Tonin and Magistrates, were to make decisions on administrative lawsuits (lawsuits related to land) in which one of the parties to a lawsuit was a Zen and Ritsu temple (a monk) (judgments were issued by a letter from the Tonin), and to create rules and regulations for these temples.

室町幕府に置かれた禅宗･律宗寺院(個人としての禅僧･律僧も含む)関係の訴訟等を取り扱った機関。室町幕府は禅律方を設けて禅律寺院を保護･統制したと推測される。禅律方の長官を頭人と呼称するが，この禅律方頭人の存在が確認できるのは，1337年(延元2∥建武4)の細川和氏から79年(天授5∥康暦1)の某まで(一時期中止される)である。頭人･奉行等で構成される禅律方の職掌は，訴訟当事者の一方が禅律寺院(僧)である所務訴訟(所領関係の訴訟)等の裁許を行うこと(判決は頭人の奉書で発給される)，またこれら寺院の規式の作成等であった。
