A former town in Monou County in the central eastern part of Miyagi Prefecture. It occupies the lowlands on the left bank of the downstream Kitakami River, and is a rice paddy area. The Ishinomaki Line runs through it. It is home to the Takaraga Mine ruins from the late Jomon period, and Asahiyama in the west is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Ishinomaki City along with the towns of Kahoku, Ogatsu, Monou, and Kitakami in Monou County, and Oshika Town in Oshika County. 69.33 km2 .
