Basilicata (English spelling)

Basilicata (English spelling)
A region in southern Italy. It has an area of 9,988 km2 and a population of 610,000 (1994). It is made up of two provinces, Potenza and Matera, and its capital is Potenza. The region is mountainous overall, with the plains along the Ionian Sea coast, making up only 8% of the region's total area. The western part is part of the Apennine Mountains, and the eastern part is mainly limestone hilly, prone to erosion, and due to past over-exploitation, landslides often occur. In addition to these natural conditions, low agricultural productivity due to large land ownership and underdeveloped transportation systems once hindered the development of this region, making it a particularly underdeveloped region in the lagging south.
