A province in the southern part of the lower Yellow River basin, China. Its abbreviated name is Yu. It occupies the Central Plain, which has been the center of Chinese activity since ancient times. Its capital is Zhengzhou. Apart from mountainous areas in the west, the province is a vast plain. Floods used to be frequent around the Yellow River, but in recent years have improved considerably with the progress of water conservancy construction. Transportation is convenient with two railways, the Jingguang-Guang and Longhai, and a well-developed road network. It is ranked first or second in China for its agricultural product, wheat. It produces sorghum, cotton, tobacco, peanuts, and cowhide. Mineral products include coal, iron, silver, and lead, and handicrafts such as wheat straw stalks, weaving, and ceramics are also carried out.
