Arnim, Achim von
Born January 26, 1781 in Berlin
[Died] January 21, 1831, Wiepersdorf German poet, novelist, and playwright. His real name was Karl Joachim Friedrich Ludwig von Arnim. He was from an old noble family. He became friends with Clemens Brentano and married his sister Bettina. In collaboration with Brentano, he collected about 600 old German folk songs, nursery rhymes, and hymns, and his work Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1805-08) is one of the greatest achievements of this period, along with the Brothers Grimm's Children's and Household Tales. He was more successful in his own creative endeavors with novels than with poetry or plays. Among his novels, Die Kronenwächter (The Defenders of the Crown) (2 volumes, 1817, 1854), a historical novel depicting in detail the hardships faced by a secret society seeking to restore the Hohenstaufen dynasty, and Isabella von Ägypten (1812), a short story about a Roma girl who was the first love of Emperor Charles V, are both considered masterpieces of Romantic literature.
