In the field of novels, he produced “The Nun” (1760-82, unpublished during his lifetime), “Rameau’s Nephew” (1761-73, unpublished during his lifetime), and “Jacques, the Fatalist, and His Master” (1772-73, revised in 1774, unpublished during his lifetime). In these novels, the established order is thrown into doubt and overturned by characters on the fringes of society (a woman who rebels against the convent system and runs away, the nephew of Rameau, a social outcast, and the servant Jacques), and from the resulting confusion, a completely new literary universe is born. …
