An old town in Tagawa County, in the north-central part of Fukuoka Prefecture. The main settlement is at the confluence of the Hikosan River and the Chuganji River, both tributaries of the Onga River, and it developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period onwards. All coal mines have now closed, and efforts are being made to attract businesses. The Heisei Chikuho Railway runs through the town. In March 2006, it merged with Akaike Town and Hojo Town in Tagawa County to become Fukuchi Town in Tagawa County. 7.46 km2 . Population 8,505 (2003). 福岡県中北部,田川郡の旧町。遠賀(おんが)川の支流彦山川と中元寺(ちゅうがんじ)川の合流点に主集落があり,明治中期以後炭鉱町として発展。現在はすべての炭鉱が閉山し,企業誘致を進めている。平成筑豊鉄道が通じる。2006年3月,田川郡赤池町,方城町と合併し町制,田川郡福智町となる。7.46km2。8505人(2003)。
