The Pythoninae subfamily consists of 22 species in five genera, distributed widely across Africa, tropical Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. Of these, the 10 species commonly known as king snakes or pythons belong to the Python genus and live in the same distribution area as the subfamily. As the English name python comes from Python, a giant snake that appears in Greek mythology, the Python genus includes four species that are over 5m in length.
