〘Noun〙① A unit of weight in the Ritsuryo system. 24 shu was set as 1 ryo, 16 ryo was set as 1 jin, and one shu was equivalent to the weight of 100 medium-sized grains of millet, following the Tang system. This was a small jin, and there was also a large jin with 3 ryo as the large ryo. Large jin was used to measure copper, silver, grains, etc., and it was stipulated that small jin be used for other purposes, but the Engishiki states that small jin should only be used when measuring medicinal herbs, and large jin for other purposes. ※Ryo Gikai (833) Miscellaneous "Proper balance. 24 ryo is 1 ryo. (That is, for two heaps of millet, 100 ryo is 1 ryo . 24 ryo is 1 ryo.) (3 ryo is 2 large ryo and 1 ryo ) . 16 ryo is 1 kin." ※Taiheiki (late 14th century) 39 "One kin (1 kin) of famous incense was burned at once." ② A unit of weight in the shakkan system. Equivalent to 160 momme, 600 grams. ※Weights and Measures Act - enacted on March 4, 1909 ( Meiji 42). "The names of weights and measures are as follows to determine their positions. (Omitted) 160 momme." ③ A unit of weight. There are various weights depending on the object being measured, such as medicines. *Storybook, Yesterday's Tale is Today's Tale (c. 1614-24), Vol. 1, "Ten carrots, not twenty." ④ A unit of weight for imported goods. It is often set at 120 momme, roughly equivalent to the British pound (453.6 grams). ⑤ A unit of weight for bread. It is expressed in a certain range of weight, between 350 and 400 grams. *Light and Darkness (1916), Natsume Soseki, Vol. 44, "Even for bread, the amount had at some point been determined to be half a jin ." ⑥ A unit of volume. Often used for sake, with one sho being one jin. *Sharebook, Nankyoku Eki Rojaku (1789), "Young man, please give me one jin ."

〘名〙① 令制の重量の単位。二四銖を一両とし、一六両を一斤とし、一銖は唐制にならって中程度の大きさのきび一〇〇粒の重さに相当する規定であった。これは小斤で、他に三両を大両とする大斤があり、大斤は銅銀穀などをはかるのに用い、他は小斤を用いる定めであったが、延喜式では湯薬をはかる場合にのみ小斤を用い、他は大斤を用いるとしている。※令義解(833)雑「権衡。廿四銖為両。〈謂。以秬黍中者百黍重銖。廿四銖為両〉〈三両為大両一両〉、十六両為斤」※太平記(14C後)三九「一斤(キン)の名香を一度に炷き上げたれば」② 尺貫法の重量の単位。一六〇匁(もんめ)、六〇〇グラムにあたる。※度量衡法‐明治四二年(1909)三月四日制定「度量衡の名称命位を定むること左の如し〈略〉斤百六十匁」③ 重量の単位。薬品など計測する対象によって、種々の重量がある。※咄本・昨日は今日の物語(1614‐24頃)上「にんじんを十きんや廿きんではなるまひ」④ 舶来品の重量の単位。英国のポンド(四五三・六グラム)にほぼ等しく一二〇匁とする場合が多い。⑤ 食パンの単位。一定範囲の重量で示し、三五〇~四〇〇グラムとする。※明暗(1916)〈夏目漱石〉四四「其麺麭も半斤(はんギン)の二分ノ一と分量は何時のまにか定められてゐた」⑥ 容量の単位。多く酒について用い、一升を一斤とする。※洒落本・南極駅路雀(1789)「若衆や、のめめへ、一つ斤(キン)取って下せへ」
