〘Noun〙① A unit of weight in the Ritsuryo system. 24 shu was set as 1 ryo, 16 ryo was set as 1 jin, and one shu was equivalent to the weight of 100 medium-sized grains of millet, following the Tang system. This was a small jin, and there was also a large jin with 3 ryo as the large ryo. Large jin was used to measure copper, silver, grains, etc., and it was stipulated that small jin be used for other purposes, but the Engishiki states that small jin should only be used when measuring medicinal herbs, and large jin for other purposes. ※Ryo Gikai (833) Miscellaneous "Proper balance. 24 ryo is ₁ ryo. (That is, for _two heaps of millet, ₁₀₀ ryo is _{1 ryo} . 24 ryo is ₁ ryo.) Equivalent to 160 momme, 600 grams. ※Weights and Measures Act - enacted on March 4, 1909 ( Meiji 42). "The names of weights and measures are as follows to determine their positions. (Omitted) 160 momme." ③ A unit of weight. There are various weights depending on the object being measured, such as medicines. *Storybook, Yesterday's Tale is Today's Tale (c. 1614-24), Vol. 1, "Ten carrots, not twenty." ④ A unit of weight for imported goods. It is often set at 120 momme, roughly equivalent to the British pound (453.6 grams). ⑤ A unit of weight for bread.
