A port city in southeastern Romania, about 140 km from the mouth of the Danube. A trading port connected to the Black Sea by a tributary of the Danube, it is the seat of the Danube Navigation Committee. Shipbuilding, chemicals, textiles, and food industries are carried out in the city, and it is home to Romania's largest steel complex (completed in 1970). It has been a center of international commerce since the 16th century, and was a free port from 1834 to 1883. Since the 19th century, it has been the center of the Romanian labor movement.
