Kanazawa [city] - Kanazawa
A city in central Ishikawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. It lies in the Sai River and Asano River basins, with the Kanazawa Plain to the northwest and the Kahokugata Lagoon to the north. The city center dates back to the founding of the Ikko sect training hall (Oyama Gobo) in 1471, and prospered as the castle town of the Kaga Maeda clan, which had a fiefdom of one million koku during the Edo period. As it was not damaged in World War II, traces of the castle town still remain in many places. As the center of the Hokuriku region, there are many government offices, and the city is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, IR Ishikawa Railway, Hokuriku Railway, and Hokuriku Expressway, and the number of commuters from various parts of the prefecture, as well as from Fukui and Toyama prefectures, is increasing. In 1970, Kanazawa New Port was built and it has been designated as an important port. Kanazawa is home to traditional industries such as Kutani ware, Ohi ware, Kanazawa gold leaf, lacquerware, Yuzen ware, and inlay, as well as general machinery, transportation equipment, food, and publishing and printing, and was ranked first in the prefecture in terms of manufacturing shipment value (2003). It also has many historical sites and cultural assets, including the remains of Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen Garden, Oyama Shrine, and Kanazawa University. Area: 468.64 km2 . Population: 462,361 (2010).
