"Pure Tamil" was considered the standard written language in ancient South India, and has since been considered the ideal style in commentaries on classical texts. It is believed to have been based on the dialects around Madurai, and is notable for having been little eroded by Sanskrit (Prakrit). The oldest Tamil grammar book, Tolkāppiyam (compiled over several centuries from around the time of Christ), is a grammar book that describes and explains this "standard language."
