1823‐1906 Belgian painter. Born in Brussels, he studied under David's student FJ Navez there, and in 1844 went to Paris, where he spent most of his life. His works depicting the lives of the wealthy classes of Paris during the Second Empire, especially women dressed in fashionable clothing, were extremely popular due to his bourgeois-friendly contemporary subject matter and his outstanding ability to capture the texture of luxurious furnishings and costumes with delicate touches and refined colors in relatively small paintings. Although he was a painter of the so-called Salon school, he is known for his friendships with innovative painters of the Paris art world at the time, such as Delacroix, Courbet, Manet, and Degas, and is considered one of the first painters to take an interest in Japonism.
