Ando clan

A powerful clan in the medieval north of Ou. During the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods, they were also written as Ando. They are said to be descendants of Abe Sadato, head of the Mutsu Province prisoners of war. During the Kamakura period, they became vassals of the Hojo clan, and served as the deputy governor of the northern part of Mutsu Province, as well as ruling over the Emishi as the deputy governor of the Ezo Kanrei. In the late Kamakura period, an internal conflict arose within the clan in connection with an Emishi uprising. They were pursued by the Kamakura shogunate, but did not surrender and a peace agreement was reached (the Ando clan rebellion). After the Nanboku-cho period, their influence extended to the Akita area of Dewa Province, and a clan appeared calling itself Minato Ando, with its base in Akita Port (present-day Akita City). During the Muromachi period, they obtained the title of Hinomoto Shogun, who governed the Emishi. The main line of the Ando clan flourished on the west side of the Tsugaru Peninsula, with its base in Tosaminato, Mutsu Province, which is now Shiura Village, Aomori Prefecture (now Goshogawara City), but in 1432, they were chased by the Nanbu clan and fled to Ezo. They later returned to Dewa Hiyama, which is now Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, and called themselves the Hiyama Ando clan. 中世の北奥羽の豪族。鎌倉・南北朝期には安藤とも記された。陸奥国俘囚長(ふしゅうのちょう)安倍貞任(さだとう)の子孫と伝える。鎌倉期に北条氏の被官となり，陸奥国北部の代官を務めるとともに，〈蝦夷管領(えぞかんれい)〉の代官として蝦夷を支配した。鎌倉後期の蝦夷の蜂起に関連して一族の内紛が発生。鎌倉幕府の追討を受けたが，屈伏することなく和談が成立（安東氏の乱）。南北朝期以後，出羽国の秋田方面にも勢力が及び，秋田湊（現秋田市）を本拠として湊安東(みなとあんどう)を名乗る一族も現れた。室町期に蝦夷を統轄する〈日之本(ひのもと)将軍〉の称号を得た。安東氏の本流は津軽半島西側，現在の青森県市浦(しうら)村（現・五所川原市）にあたる陸奥国十三湊(とさみなと)を本拠として栄えたが，1432年南部氏に追われて蝦夷地へ逃れた。のち現在の秋田県能代(のしろ)市にあたる出羽檜山(ひやま)に戻り，檜山安東氏を称した。戦国大名の秋田氏はその後身。→コシャマインの戦
