A Catholic order of hermits. It originated from a strict contemplative monastery founded in 1084 by Bruno (c. 1030-1101) and six companions in the deep mountains of La Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble, France. Following that spirit, the fifth abbot, Guigo, established the "Monastic Rules" in 1127 with the aim of harmonizing hermitage and communal life, and these were approved by Pope Innocent II in 1133. The order flourished with a mystical spirit especially in the 14th to 16th centuries, but today there are only 19 male monasteries and 4 female monasteries.
