Kanazawa Shozaburo

Linguist. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at the Imperial University (the predecessor of the Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo). A pioneer in Korean linguistics in Japan, he also conducted research on Ainu and other Oriental languages. In his works "Theory of the Concordance of the Japanese and Korean Languages," published in 1910 (Meiji 43) the year the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was concluded, and "Theory of the Common Origin of Japan and Korea" (1929), he claimed that the two languages ​​were of the same family, and in his "New Theory of Japanese Grammar" (1912) he also made comparisons with Korean and other languages. However, these did not prove that they were of the same family. In addition, his "Jirin" (1907) is a widely used Japanese dictionary that incorporates many modern words, and "Kojirin" is an expanded version of this dictionary.

言語学者。帝国大学博言学科（東京大学文学部言語学科の前身）卒業。日本における朝鮮語学の開拓者で、アイヌ語その他の東洋諸言語の研究も手がけた。日韓併合条約が締結された1910年（明治43）刊行の『日韓両国語同系論』や『日鮮同祖論』（1929）で、両国語は同系であると主張し、『日本文法新論』（1912）でも朝鮮語などとの比較を行った。しかし、これらによって同系が証明されたわけではない。このほか『辞林』（1907）は、現代語を多く取り入れた国語辞典として広く用いられ、『広辞林』はその増補版である。
